Davos (Switzerland): In a key development at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Education and IT, Nara Lokesh, held discussions with JERA Global CEO and Chairman Yukio Kani, urging the Japanese energy giant to invest in green ammonia and clean energy projects in the state.
During the meeting, Minister Lokesh highlighted Andhra Pradesh’s strong potential to become a major hub for green ammonia production and export. He invited JERA to utilise the port infrastructure at Moolapeta, Krishnapatnam, and Kakinada to develop green ammonia manufacturing units aimed at supplying low-carbon fuel to Japan and other Asian markets.
Lokesh also proposed the development of large-scale solar and wind hybrid projects in the Rayalaseema region to ensure reliable clean energy supply for industrial users. He said Andhra Pradesh offers a unique advantage with its port-led industrial corridors, renewable energy resources, and growing infrastructure, making it ideal for integrated clean energy platforms.
He further suggested that JERA explore setting up ammonia-enabled power solutions and pilot projects in collaboration with APGENCO and NTPC. These initiatives, he said, would help reduce carbon emissions while maintaining grid stability through gradual adoption of ammonia co-firing in thermal power plants.
Responding to the proposal, JERA CEO Yukio Kani said the company is actively developing green hydrogen and green ammonia value chains in India to support Japan’s future clean energy requirements. He noted that JERA is already partnering with ReNew Energy Global in utility-scale renewable power generation and is focusing on LNG-based transition energy and grid-balancing solutions.
Kani added that JERA would carefully examine the proposals made by the Andhra Pradesh government and explore potential areas of collaboration in clean energy and low-carbon infrastructure.
The meeting reflects Andhra Pradesh’s growing focus on attracting global investments in renewable energy and positioning itself as a key player in the global clean energy transition.
