The Andhra Pradesh government has intensified its fight against ganja and drug abuse, with recent efforts earning a positive response from the public. Around 70 percent of people in the state are satisfied with the measures taken so far, while steps are being planned to address the remaining gaps, according to Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh.
Speaking at a cabinet sub-committee meeting on drug control held at the State Secretariat in Amaravati, Minister Lokesh said the government is determined to completely eliminate ganja and narcotics from the state. The meeting, chaired by Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha, reviewed the progress made under the anti-drug campaign and discussed future strategies.
The minister stated that strict enforcement and coordinated action have already started showing results. He instructed officials to remain alert until drug abuse is fully eradicated. Special focus should be placed on rehabilitation, he said, directing officials to prepare a clear action plan to run de-addiction centres with the support of NGOs. He also stressed the need to introduce a “Drug-Free Andhra Pradesh” curriculum from kindergarten to postgraduate level to create awareness among students at an early stage.
As part of strengthening surveillance and enforcement, Minister Lokesh asked officials to integrate the Eagle App with the Leap App to improve coordination and monitoring. He said public awareness and technology-driven policing would play a key role in preventing drug circulation.
Officials informed the meeting that ganja cultivation has been completely eliminated in the state, making Andhra Pradesh a zero-ganja cultivation state. They said the state is now fully integrated with the NCORD (Narco-Coordination Centre) framework and has successfully dismantled several drug trafficking networks through planned operations.
According to official data, 1,721 NDPS cases have been registered so far, and 4,421 individuals have been arrested in connection with drug-related offenses. Authorities also revealed that over 40,000 Eagle Clubs have been formed and more than 35,400 awareness programmes have been conducted across the state to educate students and the public about the dangers of drug abuse.
Officials said Andhra Pradesh has now emerged as a model state in drug control efforts, with other states looking to replicate its approach. The meeting was attended by Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav, DGP Harish Kumar Gupta, Eagle IG A.K. Ravikrishna, and other senior officials.
