In a landmark step towards inclusive education, Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh has flagged off a first-of-its-kind Everest Base Camp expedition for students with special needs. The initiative, launched at his residence in Undavalli, reflects the state government’s focus on empowering students through real-world experiences.
A total of 21 students from government schools and junior colleges, studying from Class 9 to Intermediate, will take part in the 16-day high-altitude trek from April 15 to April 30. The group includes 10 students with hearing impairment, 7 with locomotor disabilities, 2 with intellectual disabilities, and 2 with visual impairment. Notably, eight of the participants are girls.
The students will travel to Nepal and aim to reach the Everest Base Camp, situated at an altitude of 5,364 meters. Organized under the Samagra Shiksha initiative, this is the first time in India that a government-supported team of students with special needs is attempting such an expedition.
Interacting with the participants, Lokesh described the journey as a life-changing experience that goes beyond textbooks. He encouraged the students to face challenges with confidence and determination, stating that such opportunities help build resilience, character, and a broader outlook towards life.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, he emphasized the importance of creating equal opportunities for all students. He noted that initiatives like this not only empower participants but also challenge societal perceptions around disability.
The students, who have undergone rigorous training at the Gandikota Adventure Sports Academy and participated in treks in Ladakh, expressed excitement and gratitude. They said the journey has already boosted their confidence and prepared them for this demanding challenge.
With this initiative, Andhra Pradesh sets a strong example in inclusive development, proving that with the right support and determination, no goal is out of reach.
