AP Must Strongly Defend Krishna Water Rights, Says Jagan Mohan Reddy

Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has urged Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to act decisively in protecting Andhra Pradesh’s rightful share of Krishna river water. Sharing the summary of his letter on social media, Jagan stressed that the upcoming hearings before the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal–II (KWDT-II) will play a crucial role in determining the future water security of AP.
He warned that the Telangana Government is demanding 763 TMC of dependable Krishna water—a request that, if approved, could severely harm Andhra Pradesh’s interests. With the Tribunal set to hear final arguments, Jagan appealed to the government to present AP’s case strongly and prevent any unfair reallocation that may jeopardize the state’s existing share.
Jagan also criticised the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) for what he called a long history of negligence toward Rayalaseema and other AP irrigation projects. He pointed out that the work to increase the Almatti Dam height from 519.6 to 524.25 meters began during the United Andhra era when Chandrababu Naidu served as both Chief Minister and the convener of the United Front in 1996. According to Jagan, opposition parties and farmers had raised serious concerns at the time, fearing that Karnataka’s move would harm Andhra Pradesh’s water rights. However, he said Naidu did not respond to those concerns, leading to the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal eventually permitting Karnataka to go ahead with the height increase.
Jagan further alleged that the TDP Government formed in 2014 also weakened Andhra Pradesh’s position by yielding crucial rights over Krishna river water to Telangana. Now, with Chandrababu Naidu once again serving as Chief Minister, the state is facing a critical and challenging moment regarding water allocations.
He urged the current TDP-led coalition to act responsibly, prioritizing the state’s long-term interests. Jagan warned that if Andhra Pradesh were to lose even one TMC from the 512 TMC net allocation granted earlier by the Bachawat Tribunal, the TDP Government would be held accountable.
He concluded by emphasising that protecting AP’s water rights is not just a political responsibility but a commitment to the welfare, agriculture, and future of the state’s people.
