The City Civil Court in Hyderabad has granted an ad-interim injunction in favour of Megastar Konidela Chiranjeevi, protecting his personality and publicity rights from unauthorised use. The order, issued on September 26, 2025 by the Chief Judge, City Civil Court, in I.A. No.6275 of 2025 in O.S.No.441 of 2025, clearly restrains several named individuals and also any person in general from using Chiranjeevi’s name, image, voice, or likeness without permission.
Chiranjeevi, one of India’s most respected film icons and a Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awardee, approached the court to stop unauthorised commercial and digital use of his identity on merchandise, online platforms, and even through AI-based applications. The court recognised his decades-long contribution to Indian cinema and noted that such misuse of his personality has caused harm to his reputation and public image.
The injunction bans defendants 1 to 33 and defendant No.36 (John Doe) from directly or indirectly using Chiranjeevi’s stage names like “Mega Star,” “Chiru,” or “Annayya”, and his voice, photos, or videos for any kind of commercial or personal benefit. The order also instructs that all defendants be urgently notified, with further proceedings scheduled for October 27, 2025.
The court made it clear that any infringement or defamation involving Chiranjeevi’s identity will invite strict legal consequences under both civil and criminal law. It also warned TV channels, digital platforms, and media outlets not to use or distort Chiranjeevi’s image, name, or voice for TRP gains or promotions without his written approval.
On October 11, 2025, Chiranjeevi personally met Mr. Sajjanar, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, and handed him a copy of the court order. During their meeting, the two discussed the need to make penal laws stronger to curb such violations and protect artists from privacy breaches. Mr. Sajjanar lauded Chiranjeevi’s proactive legal step, calling it a milestone in upholding personality and publicity rights in the Indian entertainment industry.
Chiranjeevi expressed his heartfelt thanks to Sri S. Nagesh Reddy, Advocate, and his legal team for their dedication and professional expertise, which helped secure this landmark judgment ensuring stronger protection for artists’ image and reputation.
