In a disturbing case of cyber fraud, Urmila, the wife of former CBI Joint Director and retired IPS officer VV Lakshminarayana, has reportedly fallen victim to an online stock market scam, losing a massive ₹2.58 crore. The fraudsters allegedly lured her with promises of exceptionally high returns, claiming investments would generate up to 500 percent profits.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred between December 24, 2025, and January 5, 2026, during which Urmila transferred money in 19 separate transactions. Believing the assurances given by the scammers, she invested large sums into what was projected as a lucrative stock trading opportunity. To arrange the funds, loans were taken against gold belonging to both her and her husband, further deepening the financial impact.
The fraud came to light after repeated attempts to withdraw profits failed, raising suspicion about the legitimacy of the scheme. Realizing she had been cheated, Urmila approached the Hyderabad police and lodged a formal complaint on January 6. The case has drawn attention due to the profile of the victim’s family and highlights how even well-informed individuals can be targeted through sophisticated cybercrime tactics.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to trace the perpetrators, bank accounts, and digital platforms involved in the scam. Cybercrime officials have once again urged the public to be cautious of investment offers promising unrealistic returns and to verify the authenticity of trading platforms before transferring funds. The incident stands as a strong reminder of the growing threat of cyber fraud linked to fake stock market investments.
