Jan Komasa‘s Good Boy feels like a summation of every cinematic trend of the past five years. For one, it stars Stephen Graham, who, after the immense success of Netflix’s Adolescence, is the new father figure of Broken Britain storytelling, turning in vulnerable and compelling performances one after the other. Then, it’s an odd mix of horror and comedy, not quite the surrealism of Ari Aster, but a Yorgos Lanthimos style of composed, polite characters who seem like ordinary folk until we watch them carry out heinous acts. And, the main issue that current cinema just can’t get enough of, for better or worse, the class divide, is planted firmly at the center of this story. Good Boy isn’t even the only film premiering in 2025 with its name, as the dog-centered horror movie of the same name is already currently in theaters.
