Andhra Pradesh Minister for Education, IT, and Electronics, Nara Lokesh, announced that the state government aims to create one lakh blue-collar jobs through Omcap over the next five years. He directed the Skill Development Corporation officials to prepare a clear roadmap and work systematically toward this goal.
During a review meeting with Skill Development officials at his Undavalli residence, Lokesh said that nursing staff, welders, truck drivers, and construction workers are in high demand in Europe, Germany, and Italy. He advised officials to train students from nursing, ITI, and polytechnic backgrounds in foreign languages to help them secure overseas jobs. He also suggested studying the Kerala model for nursing placements abroad.
Lokesh stated that 2,774 nursing candidates are currently receiving foreign language training under Omcap. He mentioned that an MoU has been signed with DEFA and TELC (The European Language Certification) to set up a German language assessment center in the state.
Reviewing the Skill Portal, Lokesh said that data from 23 departments has been integrated, which will connect the needs of 4,639 large and medium industries in Andhra Pradesh with skilled workers. He instructed officials to make the complete job database accessible to youth by next month.
The minister directed that 83 government ITIs in the state be developed in mission mode, with ₹322 crore proposals already prepared for modernization and infrastructure upgrades. Officials informed him that admissions in ITIs have increased but there is a shortage of staff. Lokesh urged them to make Andhra Pradesh No.1 in PM Viksit Bharat Rojgar Yojana and PM Internship schemes.
He emphasized improving curriculum, testing, internships, certification, and placements in ITIs and discussed upgrading institutes under the PM Setu Scheme. Officials also pointed out that 646 teaching and 2,183 non-teaching posts in 87 polytechnic colleges are currently vacant.
Lokesh instructed that successful models from other states be studied to improve polytechnics and proposed developing Visakhapatnam, Anantapur, and Chittoor as three major skill hubs under the Hub and Spoke model, linking them to 13 other ITIs across the state.
He revealed that ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel’s training arm, NAMTECH (New Age Makers’ Institute of Technology), is coming forward to set up a Skill Training Center in Andhra Pradesh.
