India’s largest airline IndiGo is facing one of the biggest operational breakdowns in recent years, triggering chaos across major airports as hundreds of flights continue to be cancelled or heavily delayed. New DGCA duty-time regulations for pilots, tighter night-operation limits, internal roster mismanagement, and a packed flight network have collectively pushed IndiGo into an unprecedented crisis, affecting thousands of passengers across Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and other key cities.
The airline has cancelled over a thousand flights within just a few days, with more disruptions expected through the weekend. Passengers reported long queues, unclear announcements, delayed baggage, and hours of waiting without proper updates. Some even spent the night at airport floors due to lack of alternative arrangements. Social media has been flooded with visuals of crowded terminals, angry passengers, and staff struggling to manage the situation.
IndiGo acknowledged the issue in an internal communication, admitting accumulated planning errors and insufficient buffer time under the new DGCA norms. The airline’s tight network, early-morning and late-night flights, and limited rest cycles for crew made the schedule unsustainable once the revised rules kicked in. With several pilots unavailable for back-to-back duty slots, flight operations collapsed rapidly.
The Aviation Ministry has asked IndiGo to offer immediate refunds or easy rebooking options for stranded travellers. Indian Railways has also stepped in by adding extra coaches to premium trains to help passengers find alternative travel options during the crisis. IndiGo expects gradual normalisation between December 10 and 15, but travel disruptions may continue until full crew schedules are restored and network load stabilises. For now, passengers are advised to check flight status frequently, keep backup plans ready, and reach airports only after receiving airline confirmation.
