The investigation into the alleged custodial torture of Andhra Pradesh Deputy Speaker Raghurama Krishnam Raju has entered an important phase. IPS officer Sunil Naik, who has been named as an accused in the case, will be questioned for five days starting today.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court directed Sunil Naik to appear before the investigating officer from March 5 to March 9. He has been asked to attend the inquiry every day from 10 am to 5 pm and cooperate with the investigation. Authorities have made arrangements for the questioning at the CCS Police Station in Guntur. Vizianagaram Superintendent of Police A.R. Damodar, who is serving as the investigating officer, will conduct the interrogation.
The case goes back to May 2021 when Raghurama Krishnam Raju was the Member of Parliament from Narasapuram. He was arrested at his residence in Hyderabad and later taken to the CID regional office in Guntur. He was kept at the CID office through the night after his arrest. Raghurama Krishnam Raju later alleged that he was subjected to severe custodial torture during the interrogation. After the coalition government came to power in Andhra Pradesh, he filed a complaint with the Nagarampalem Police in Guntur and accused several officials of involvement in the incident.
During the investigation it was found that Sunil Naik, who was serving as CID DIG on deputation at that time, had visited the CID regional office in Guntur several times on the night of the incident. Based on these findings, he was named as Accused No. 7 in the case. Police issued multiple notices asking Sunil Naik to appear for questioning. He did not respond to those notices. Andhra Pradesh Police later traced him in Patna and took him into custody. However, he could not be brought to Andhra Pradesh immediately because a transit warrant was not granted.
Sunil Naik later approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court seeking anticipatory bail. While hearing the petition, the court directed him to appear before the investigating officer and cooperate with the inquiry.
With Sunil Naik now appearing before investigators, the probe has reached a crucial stage. The investigation team is expected to question him in detail about the events that took place on the night Raghurama Krishnam Raju was held at the CID office.
