Norris Takes Dramatic Singapore Grand Prix Win, Cuts Verstappen’s Lead

Estimated read time 2 min read

Lando Norris took a dominant victory from pole position at the Singapore Grand Prix, leading from lights to flag to reduce Max Verstappen’s championship lead to 52 points with six races remaining.

Norris in Control

Norris made a brilliant start to hold off Verstappen into Turn 1 and never looked back, controlling the race throughout. He even survived a couple of brushes with the walls to secure his third win of the season. Verstappen finished a distant second, while Norris’ McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri took a surprise third place after a strategic gamble on tire wear paid off.

Ferrari’s Disappointment

Ferrari had a disappointing race. Charles Leclerc battled his way up to fifth after a poor qualifying session that saw him lose his fastest lap time for a track limits violation. His teammate Carlos Sainz crashed in Q3, bringing out the red flags and limiting him to a tenth-place start, which he could only convert into seventh at the finish.

Mercedes Struggles

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell also had a tough race for Mercedes. They opted for a one-stop strategy that didn’t work out, leaving them struggling on worn tires in the latter stages. Hamilton finished fourth, while Russell was passed by Piastri for the final podium spot.

McLaren Extends Lead in Constructors’ Standings

With Norris’ win and Piastri’s third place, McLaren extended their lead in the constructors’ championship to 41 points over Red Bull. The Woking squad is now firmly in the fight for both titles.

Red Bull’s Troubles Continue

Red Bull continued their struggles with Verstappen’s second place the only real highlight. Sergio Perez had a poor qualifying and could only manage tenth, while Daniel Ricciardo finished last after taking a late pit stop for fastest lap. Red Bull will need to find improvements if they are to challenge McLaren for the constructors’ championship.

The Verdict: Title Race Still Open

Norris’ dominant win has thrown the championship wide open. While Verstappen still holds a lead, McLaren’s strong performance suggests they are a real threat. The next six races will be crucial in deciding who will be crowned champion in 2024.
