The Telangana State Election Commission on Tuesday announced the complete schedule for the upcoming municipal elections, setting the stage for a major political contest across the state. Polling will be held on February 11 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., while counting of votes will take place on February 13.
As per the notification, the election process will begin with the filing of nominations from January 28 to January 30. Scrutiny of nominations will be conducted soon after, and the final list of candidates will be released on February 3. With the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct has come into force across the concerned urban areas.
Elections will be conducted in a total of 123 Urban Local Bodies, including 116 municipalities and 7 municipal corporations. The polls will cover 2,996 wards across the state, with arrangements made at 8,203 polling stations. For smooth conduct of voting, the Election Commission has arranged 16,031 ballot boxes.
The total electorate stands at 52.43 lakh voters. Interestingly, women voters outnumber men this time. There are 26.80 lakh women voters, 25.62 lakh men voters, and 640 voters registered under the ‘others’ category.
Ward-wise reservation has also been finalized. Out of the total wards, 1,511 are unreserved, 854 are reserved for Backward Classes, 444 for Scheduled Castes, and 187 for Scheduled Tribes.
With major political parties like Congress, BRS, and BJP gearing up for the contest, the municipal elections are expected to be keenly fought. The results on February 13 are likely to play a key role in shaping the political mood of Telangana in the coming months.
