A pre-wedding photoshoot at the famous Bettada Bhairaveshwara Temple in Karnataka’s Hassan district reportedly turned violent after a group of photographers was allegedly attacked by local men, leaving them injured and causing damage to costly camera equipment.
The shocking incident took place on Friday morning at the hilltop temple in Sakleshpur, a scenic and popular location often chosen for pre-wedding and tourism photography. What began as a routine shoot soon escalated into a serious clash, raising concerns about the safety of photographers and visitors at tourist and religious sites.
According to the police complaint, 21-year-old photographer Naveenandan K.S. from Hassan reached the temple premises around 7:30 AM along with his colleague Chetan and an engaged couple for a pre-wedding photoshoot. About half an hour later, another photography team from Bengaluru, consisting of Abhishek and Yashwant, also arrived at the location.
Trouble reportedly started when a local man identified as Abhi, a resident of Marubailu village, objected to the Bengaluru team over what has been described as a minor issue. The disagreement soon turned into a heated argument, and Yashwant was allegedly assaulted during the confrontation.
The situation became more serious around 9:00 AM when Abhi allegedly returned to the temple area along with 7 to 8 associates in two cars. The group, reportedly identified as Prashanth, Rakshay, Aravind, Uchit, Prajwal and Nishanth, is accused of launching a violent attack on the photographers using wooden sticks and stones.
In his complaint, Naveenandan alleged that the attackers grabbed him by the neck and attempted to choke him. He also stated that his gold chain was snatched during the assault. More seriously, he said the accused smashed his professional camera and lenses, causing losses estimated at around ₹5 lakh. The photographers also reported that multiple pieces of photography equipment were damaged in the attack.
Following the incident, the injured victims were shifted for medical treatment. Some of them were admitted to Sakleshpur Government Hospital, while others were taken to Hassan District Hospital for further care. Their injuries are said to be non-fatal, but the attack has left the photography community deeply disturbed.
Based on the complaint, Sakleshpur Rural Police registered a case under Crime No. 49/2026 and booked the accused under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges reportedly include unlawful assembly, rioting, assault, causing hurt, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation and damage to property. Police have launched a search operation, and the accused were reported to be absconding at the time of filing the case.
The incident has sparked outrage among photographers and content creators, many of whom say that tourist destinations and temple surroundings frequently attract pre-wedding shoots, but often lack proper regulation and security. Some local voices have also pointed out that visitors should respect temple customs and seek permission where required, while many others strongly condemned the alleged violence and destruction of property.
The attack has now reignited debate over how public, heritage and religious spaces should be managed when they are used for photography and social media content. While rules and permissions may vary from place to place, the use of violence in such situations has drawn sharp criticism.
As the investigation continues, the incident has become a major talking point in Karnataka, with growing calls for stronger protection for photographers, better crowd control at tourist locations and clear guidelines for commercial and pre-wedding shoots at religious site.
