Rashmika Mandanna and Dheekshith Shetty are set to charm audiences in their upcoming romantic drama The Girlfriend, directed by Rahul Ravindran. Produced by Dheeraj Mogilineni and Vidya Koppineedi under the banners of Geetha Arts and Dheeraj Mogilineni Entertainment, and presented by Allu Aravind, the film is gearing up for a grand theatrical release — in Hindi and Telugu on November 7, and in Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada on November 14.
In a recent interview, actor Dheekshith Shetty opened up about his experience working on the project and why it holds a special place in his heart. Calling it “the best film” of his career so far, Dheekshith said The Girlfriend is a story people can truly relate to in their real lives. He revealed that after Dasara, this was the next big opportunity that came his way. Director Rahul Ravindran, impressed by his interviews during Dasara promotions, felt Dheekshith was perfect for the role of Vikram — the boyfriend. After reading the script, Dheekshith instantly connected with the character and the emotional depth of the story.
He praised Rahul Ravindran for his clear vision and guidance, which made it easier for him to portray Vikram’s complex, layered personality. While some may mistake the character for a “toxic boyfriend” based on the trailer, Dheekshith clarified that Rahul ensured Vikram didn’t appear negative but instead reflected a realistic portrayal of human emotions.
According to Dheekshith, The Girlfriend is not just another love story — it’s an emotional journey that stays with the audience long after they leave the theater. He said the movie presents romance from a refreshing, realistic perspective. “We watch movies for entertainment, but some films touch our lives deeply. The Girlfriend is one of those films,” he shared, adding that people aged 18 to 25 will especially connect with its message.
Speaking about Rashmika Mandanna, Dheekshith couldn’t stop praising her. “No other actress could have done justice to this role. On screen, you won’t see Rashmika — you’ll only see her character, Bhuma,” he said. Despite her stardom, Rashmika remained humble and friendly with everyone on set, even when her film Animal was ruling the box office.
The actor also highlighted that the film goes beyond youthful romance, offering strong family emotions and meaningful life lessons. “When we say toxic boyfriend, people imagine someone with anger or addiction issues. But toxicity can come in many forms, and our film explores that aspect beautifully,” he explained.
Recalling a memorable moment, Dheekshith shared that Allu Aravind Garu watched the film’s rushes and personally called him to appreciate his performance. “I was nervous, thinking he might criticize me, but he praised my work and even gave me an advance for my next film. That moment gave me immense confidence,” he said with a smile.
Dheekshith also expressed gratitude to producers Vidya Koppineedi and Dheeraj Mogilineni for their constant support, and mentioned that Hesham’s music will be a big highlight. His personal favorite song from the album is “Em Jarugutundi.”
Wrapping up, Dheekshith affirmed that The Girlfriend is the best film of his career so far and one that he’s truly proud of. He also revealed his upcoming lineup — Bank of Bhagyalakshmi releasing in Telugu on November 21, Shabana, KJQ, and an untitled film, along with projects in Kannada, Malayalam, and Tamil industries.
With its relatable emotions, strong performances, and soulful music, The Girlfriend promises to be one of the most heartfelt romantic dramas of the year.
