After nearly two decades, actress Laya has reunited with actor Shivaji for the upcoming film Sampraadayini Suppini Suddhapusani, and she says the film will appeal to audiences of all sections as a complete entertainer. The film, directed by Sudheer Sriram and produced under Sri Shivaji Productions in association with ETV Win, is gearing up for a theatrical release on March 6. The recently released trailer has already created strong buzz, presenting the film as a crime-comedy family thriller.
Speaking to the media, Laya shared that it has been almost 20 years since she acted with Shivaji. When she was first approached for the project, she assumed it was a family drama. However, she was pleasantly surprised to learn that it was an out-and-out comedy entertainer, which happens to be her favorite genre. She described the film as a dark comedy crime thriller with an interesting twist and thrilling elements, adding that she felt a unique vibe the moment she heard the story.
In the film, Laya plays the character Uttara, a role she says is unlike anything she has done before. She expressed excitement about portraying a strong character who even dominates a powerful role like Mangapathi’s. According to her, the scenes between Shivaji and herself will be highly hilarious. She added that Shivaji encouraged her a lot during the shoot and that she thoroughly enjoyed performing this character.
There was speculation earlier that the film might release directly on OTT. Laya clarified that it was initially planned for a theatrical release, but at one stage, there were discussions about an OTT premiere. She admitted feeling slightly disappointed at that time, as she is used to seeing herself on the big screen. However, after several prominent viewers appreciated the film and felt it deserved a theatrical release, the makers decided to bring it to cinemas. She revealed that her daughter was especially happy about this decision, as she prefers watching her mother’s films in theatres.
Talking about expectations, Laya said the trailer has received a positive response and that the film will leave audiences satisfied. She believes viewers will walk out feeling they have watched a genuinely entertaining movie that caters to all age groups.
Reflecting on Shivaji’s journey, she said his passion for cinema has only grown stronger over the years. According to her, he constantly thinks about how to present films better to the audience and remains deeply committed to the craft.
She also praised director Sudheer Sriram, describing him as a filmmaker with clarity and vision. She said he extracted exactly the kind of performances he wanted from the actors and made the film highly entertaining without compromising on quality.
Laya pointed out that audiences often associate her with emotional roles, but this film shows a different side of her. In Sampraadayini Suppini Suddhapusani, she plays a somewhat selfish character who prioritizes her husband and family above all else. She mentioned that while she may appear soft, she can portray strong emotions powerfully when required, and this role gave her that opportunity.
On choosing roles, Laya said she is not particular about doing only lead roles. She is open to both lead and supporting roles as long as the story and character are strong. With limited scope for female characters in films, she prefers selecting meaningful roles. Having done many soft roles in the past, she now aims to take up stronger and more impactful characters.
Regarding her upcoming projects, she revealed that she is acting in Vadhalu alongside Jagapathi Babu, where she plays his wife in a psychological thriller. She is also part of a socio-fantasy film with Srikanth, directed by Nageswara Reddy, which she described as being in the style of Yamaleela. Laya concluded by saying she is exploring different genres and is excited about the new phase of her career.
With comedy, crime, and family emotions blended together, Sampraadayini Suppini Suddhapusani is set to hit theatres on March 6, promising an entertaining cinematic experience.
