Actress Kamakshi Bhaskarla is gearing up for the release of Agadha, a thriller directed by M.S. Raju. The film is scheduled to hit theatres on August 14. Ahead of the release, Kamakshi interacted with the media and opened up about her character, the challenges she faced, her nine-year journey in the film industry and why she continues to choose content-driven roles.
Kamakshi said she was delighted when veteran producer Shyam Prasad Reddy compared her with Anushka. “I felt very happy that such a senior producer compared me with Anushka. It also makes me feel more responsible,” she said.
For Agadha, Kamakshi plays Mahadevi, a character that required her to undergo a significant transformation. She revealed that she studied Buddhism and learned about black magic as part of her preparation for the role. She also studied different mudras, along with the character’s behaviour and mannerisms.
“It took me some time to transform myself for the role of Mahadevi. I had to put Kamakshi aside and completely adapt myself to the character. I took great care to ensure that Kamakshi should not be visible anywhere in the film,” she explained.
The actress also spoke about the film’s costumes, saying that everything was designed according to M.S. Raju’s vision. She initially found it difficult to carry herself in the sarees chosen for the character but eventually adapted to the look.
Kamakshi said the action sequences were prepared through workshops and rehearsals conducted well ahead of the shoot. According to her, the entire team worked hard to bring out the best possible output despite the usual challenges on set.
She recalled being particularly excited when M.S. Raju approached her for Agadha. Kamakshi said she has always admired his films, with Manasantha Nuvve being one of her favourites. She added that she was happy when Raju told her that he had watched her performance in Polimera.
The actress became emotional while speaking about her journey in the industry and her efforts to establish herself through female-led stories. She questioned why films led by women are often labelled “female-centric”, while films led by male actors are rarely described in the same way.
Kamakshi revealed that she had been waiting for the right opportunities since 2019 and had attended numerous auditions, including auditions for smaller roles. She said she continues to lead a simple life despite gaining recognition through her films.
She also recalled facing unpleasant experiences because of the actors she had previously worked with. According to Kamakshi, there were occasions when she was rejected simply because she had acted alongside certain actors. She said she believes artists should not be judged based on their previous co-stars.
Kamakshi clarified that she does not want to be restricted to a particular genre. While films like Polimera and Agadha have given her strong roles, she wants to prove that she can take up different kinds of characters. She has already signed her next film, which she described as a love story.
The actress also explained why she is not actively choosing glamorous roles. She said she prefers playing relatable women who reflect the lives of ordinary Telugu households. Her aim, she added, is to make audiences feel that the women they see on screen could be someone from their own family.
Speaking about Agadha, Kamakshi said the film’s concept and her character immediately impressed her. She also accepted the project because she wanted the experience of working with M.S. Raju.
Kamakshi described Agadha as more of a thrilling and divine experience than a conventional horror film. She revealed that the movie contains several divine moments and believes audiences will experience a strong spiritual feeling by the end.
The actress was equally appreciative of the technical team. She praised cinematographer Nani Chamidisetty for experimenting with the visuals and bringing M.S. Raju’s vision to life. She also appreciated the art work, sets, Goddess idol and DI work, while highlighting the background score for taking several scenes to another level.
Kamakshi has currently taken a break from her medical profession as she wants to focus on acting. She said she wants to remain in the film industry and use her work to represent ordinary women and bring their stories to the screen.
Although she has previously worked as an assistant director, associate director and as part of writing teams, Kamakshi said she is not planning to direct immediately. She expressed interest in directing someday but believes it will take more time before she takes that step.
Kamakshi is confident about Agadha’s outcome and hopes the film becomes a major success, particularly because it marks M.S. Raju’s return. She revealed that she has already watched the film and was surprised by how certain scenes turned out on screen.
“I was in tears during several portions of the film. Personally, I felt extremely happy after watching the movie,” Kamakshi said, expressing confidence that Agadha will connect with audiences.
