A new web series is being made loosely based on the life story of businessman Vijay Mallya. Titled Billionaire, the series stars Arjun Rampal in the lead and is expected to go on floors in November. The makers have clarified that it is not a direct biopic of Mallya, but the story is loosely based on his journey. Arjun Rampal will play a wealthy businessman who builds a large business empire and gains money and influence. The series will explore his rise, ambition, power and the personal cost of his choices. Hansal Mehta and Robbie Grewal are directing the project, which is backed by Amazon Prime.
The connection to Vijay Mallya has already created interest around the series. Mallya built a business empire through the UB Group and became one of India’s most visible businessmen. His Kingfisher Airlines later ran into financial problems and eventually shut down. The airline’s unpaid loans became the centre of a major financial and legal dispute. Mallya left India in 2016 when banks were pursuing the recovery of large dues linked to Kingfisher Airlines. He has denied that he fled the country, saying at the time that he had travelled abroad as an international businessman. Indian authorities are trying for his extradition from the United Kingdom in connection with financial crime allegations.
