In a serious cybersecurity breach, hackers have reportedly infiltrated WhatsApp media groups belonging to several Telangana government ministers. These cyber criminals are distributing malicious APK files under the guise of an “SBI Aadhaar Update”. The messages appear to come from State Bank of India, urging recipients to update their Aadhaar details immediately.
Once the unsuspecting victim downloads and installs the APK file, the malware can take over the device, steal banking credentials, intercept OTPs, and even gain remote access to the phone. According to cybersecurity analysts, this type of scam is increasingly common on messaging apps: malicious APK files masquerade as trusted updates and exploit users’ trust and urgency.
Experts urge WhatsApp users to stay vigilant. Key warning signs include: receiving APK files in groups or chats from unknown sources, unexpected prompts to update Aadhaar or bank KYC via direct messages, and seeing official logos (such as “SBI”) used inappropriately in group icons or messages. If you notice the SBI symbol as a WhatsApp group icon, it is strongly advised to exit and delete the group immediately.
Remember: Legitimate banks and government agencies rarely ask users to install APK files via messaging apps. Always verify through official channels. To protect yourself: avoid installing APKs from WhatsApp or unknown sources, enable two-step verification on your messaging and banking apps, keep your phone’s OS and apps updated, and monitor for any unusual activity on your device or bank account.
