Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is moving swiftly to secure constitutional protection for Amaravati, reinforcing its status as the state capital. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had recognised this need long ago, during Naidu’s 2014–19 tenure, when Amaravati was formally declared the capital on the floor of the Assembly.
Although the YSRCP, then in Opposition, had extended unconditional support to Amaravati, the party reversed its stand after coming to power. Its leadership mocked the capital as “Kammaravati” and stalled development works in the region. This disruption raised fresh concerns about the future and stability of the capital project.
To prevent any such political uncertainty in the years ahead, CM Naidu has begun a strategic push for constitutional protection. With YSRCP’s “destructive politics” still a point of concern for Amaravati’s supporters, Naidu believes only a legal safeguard from the Centre can ensure the capital’s security. Formal representations have already been sent by the AP coalition government to the NDA leadership in Delhi.
As the TDP is a key ally in the NDA government, the pathway for Amaravati to receive constitutional backing appears clearer than ever. While construction works in Amaravati are being fast-tracked on the ground, preparations are also underway for the next phase of land pooling to expand the capital region.
Observers note that building a new capital is a rare opportunity for any state, but during the YSRCP regime, the project faced severe setbacks and alleged attempts to derail it. To ensure such episodes are not repeated, constitutional protection under the current NDA government is seen as crucial.
Highly reliable sources indicate that CM Chandrababu Naidu is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon to push for Amaravati’s constitutional status. Speculation is also strong that Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan may join Naidu during this meeting, signalling the commitment of the AP coalition government to safeguard Amaravati’s future.
