Kara Review: Dhanush Shines in a Decent Heist Drama

Ai generated article, credit to orginal website, May 1, 2026

Kara is a 2026 Tamil-language Action Heist Thriller film written by Alfred Prakash & Vignesh Raja and directed by Vignesh Raja. It is dubbed into Telugu with the same title. The film has Dhanush & Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles, while K.S. Ravikumar, Karunas, Jayaram, Prithvi Pandiarajan, Suraj Venjaramoodu, M.S. Baskar, Sreeja Ravi & others in important supporting roles. The music is composed by GV Prakash Kumar. The film is produced by Dr. Ishari K. Ganesh & Kushmitha Ganesh under Vels Film International & Think Studios banners.
Story:
Set in Ramanathapuram in 1991, amid fuel shortages caused by the Gulf War, the film follows Karasaami (Dhanush), a smart thief who secretly robs wealthy homes while maintaining a clean image in front of his wife, Malli (Mamita Baiju). His life falls apart when he gets caught by the cops in a robbery, but he escapes from custody while being chased by DCP Bharathan (Suraj Venjaramoodu).
He then returns to his village with his wife, only to find his father, Kandhasaami (KS. Ravikumar), deep in debt. What follows is Kara’s redemption story, where he tries to fix his mistakes, save his family, and win back their lost land from the ruthless bankers.
What about on-screen performances?
Dhanush, as usual, gives out yet another outstanding performance as Kara. These kinds of roles are a cake walk for this award-winning actor, and he pulls it off with utmost ease and conviction. He is superb in all the emotional scenes and kills it with his expressions in all the tense moments and the robbery scenes.
Mamitha Baiju fits well into the role of Malli. It is good to see her in the role of a village belle, and performance-wise, she does an effective job. But her role is very limited in the film, and it could’ve been better if her role had more relevance to the plot.
K.S. Ravikumar gives out an emotional performance as the hero’s father. All his scenes with Dhanush in the first half are touching and will move us.
Jayaram is brilliant in his grey-shaded role as the bank officer. He shows his experience and gives the right kind of expressions in a meaty role.
Suraj Venjaramoodu impresses as the police officer who is in charge of the case. All his investigation scenes add good value to the plot.
Karunas, Prithvi Pandiarajan, M.S. Baskar, Sreeja Ravi, Aadukalam Naren, Vela Ramamoorthy, PL. Thenappan, Asuran JK & others are good in their respective supporting roles, each fitting perfectly into their character arcs.
What about off-screen talents?
The story by Alfred Prakash & Vignesh Raja is a familiar one revolving around a common man’s struggles and his fight against the system. The film’s biggest strength lies in its progression from a grounded rural setup to an intense thriller. The transition is smooth and effective. But the biggest minus is that the exploitation by banks through high interest rates on the villagers should have been shown in a more detailed manner for the robberies to have a much bigger emotional connect.
The screenplay by Alfred Prakash & Vignesh Raja is tightly knit, with the heist scenes being the best parts of the film. All the bank robbery portions are gripping, and the suspense generated in those sequences will keep the audience on the edge of their seats. But there are a few slow parts as well, especially in the middle portions of both halves.
Director Vignesh Raja does an extraordinary job with his craft. His presentation is first-rate, and the way he has handled the tension in the film is highly appreciable. He shows his brilliance in the bank heist sequence, leading into the interval, which is superbly executed. The tension, staging, and payoff in this scene make this a proper theatrical experience.
The Telugu dialogues are well-written, and the Telugu dubbing is done neatly. But the dubbing of a couple of supporting actors needed a better voice.
The music by GV Prakash Kumar is good. All the songs fit well into the narrative, and he adds immense value with his impactful background score, which elevates and also becomes the soul of the movie.
The cinematography by Theni Eswar is commendable. His framing is on point, and the lighting is impressive. He captures all the tense moments with precision and accuracy.
The edit by Sreejith Sarang is sharp. The way he cuts all the robbery portions is impressive. But there is a little lag in the middle portions, which should’ve been taken care of.
The artwork by Mayapandi and the costumes by Dinesh Manoharan & Kavya Sriram are authentic.
The production values by Vels Film International & Think Studios are top-notch.
What’s Hot?
* Dhanush’s Performance
* All Supporting Artists’ Performances
* Thrilling Pre-Interval Portions
* All Bank Robbery Scenes
* Emotional Father-Son Bonding
* Good Songs & Superb Background Score
* Cinematography & Production Values
What’s Not?
* Slow Paced Narrative
* Slight Drag In The Second Half
* Mamitha Baiju’s Characterization
* Few Logical Loopholes
* Telugu Dubbing Of A Few Supporting Actors
* Lengthy Run Time
Verdict: Overall, Kara stands out as a satisfactory and well-crafted heist thriller in recent times, with a mix of action, thrill, and emotion along with strong technical backing and engaging storytelling. If you can keep the slow-paced narrative aside, Dhanush kills it with his performance, and with a strong supporting cast, this film could be your big theatrical experience this week.
