After a series of underwhelming performances from big-budget action and spy films, Bollywood is now pinning its hopes on Alpha, starring Alia Bhatt. The film heads for release tomorrow amid decent curiosity, but the industry is more interested in one question than the opening numbers—can Alpha revive the struggling spy genre?
Over the past couple of years, several action spectacles have failed to meet expectations despite massive budgets and star power. The only recent exception has been Dhurandhar, which surprised everyone with its strong content and went on to set new benchmarks for the genre. Alpha has had a far from smooth journey. The film reportedly underwent multiple rounds of reshoots, forcing the makers to postpone the release. Those delays naturally raised questions about the final output. While the promotional campaign has generated some attention, the advance bookings have remained below expectations, indicating that the film will largely depend on positive word of mouth after release.
That is exactly why the entire Hindi film industry is keeping a close watch on Alpha. A strong opening weekend backed by good audience response could restore confidence in large-scale spy films and encourage producers to greenlight similar projects. On the other hand, another disappointing result could make the producers rethink investments in the genre at a time when theatrical business remains unpredictable.
YRF last produced War 2 with Hrithik Roshan and NTR playing the lead roles. The film was a massive debacle and the production house has pinned many hopes on Alpha. Directed by Shiv Rawail, the film features Alia Bhatt, Sharvari, Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol in the lead roles.
