SS Rajamouli has officially locked April 7, 2027 as the release date for Varanasi. The film’s shoot is progressing as planned and the director recently confirmed that around 80 shooting days are still pending. While the team is working to complete the shoot by Dasara this year, Rajamouli’s biggest challenge begins only after the cameras stop rolling—delivering the film on the announced date without any postponement. The concern is the international release calendar. Hollywood biggies Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and Panic Carefully are scheduled to release at the same time during the release of Varanasi. Both films are expected to dominate IMAX and other premium large-format screens across North America, Europe and several international markets. This could reduce the number of premium screens available for Rajamouli’s film after its opening week.
Varanasi is being mounted as a global action adventure with extensive visual effects and large-scale action episodes. Rajamouli’s films have always enjoyed a strong run in IMAX and premium formats, especially after the worldwide success of RRR. A significant portion of the film’s overseas collections is expected to come from these high-priced screens, making them crucial for its overall box-office performance. Unlike the Indian market, where additional shows can be accommodated easily, overseas exhibitors follow a strict release calendar. Hollywood studios reserve IMAX and premium screens months in advance. In tough competition coming from Hollywood biggies, it is a challenge for Varanasi to acquire the best screens during the season.
At present, Rajamouli is busy filming key portions of the project with Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The team is expected to complete the shoot later this year before moving into an extensive post-production phase. The makers remain confident about the April 2027 release.
There is no doubt that Varanasi will open on a massive scale across the globe. However, sustaining its run in the overseas market could be its biggest challenge for now.
