The Telangana government has revised the cinema ticket pricing structure in the state, with the latest GO allowing single-screen theatres to charge higher rates under premium and special categories. The new order follows representations from the Active Telugu Film Producers Guild and individual producers seeking enhancement of cinema ticket rates for high-budget films and a simpler process for ticket price approvals. The government has now reclassified theatres and fixed a new price structure across the state.
For non-AC single-screen theatres, the minimum price remains Rs 30 for non-premium seats, while the maximum is Rs 70. Premium seats can now be priced between Rs 50 and Rs 100. In AC theatres, non-premium tickets can range from Rs 50 to Rs 150, while premium seats can go up to Rs 200.
The bigger change comes with the new Special Theatre category. Stand-alone single-screen theatres with facilities such as 7.1 or higher surround sound, 2K/4K projection and IMAX or large screens measuring 75 feet and above, and theatres that offer facilities on par with multiplex standards, will fall under this category. Such theatres can charge between Rs 100 and Rs 250 for non-premium seats and between Rs 200 and Rs 300 for premium or recliner seats.
Multiplex rates remain at Rs 100 to Rs 250 for regular seats and Rs 200 to Rs 300 for recliners. The rates mentioned in the GO are exclusive of GST. The government has also made it mandatory for every theatre to keep 25 percent of its total seats under the non-premium category. This applies irrespective of whether the theatre is AC, non-AC, special or multiplex. The move is aimed at keeping a lower-priced option available for audiences. Air-cooled theatres have also been merged with AC theatres for admission rates. Such theatres have been given two years to convert into AC theatres. If they do not convert, they will have to collect non-AC charges thereafter.
This is a shock for the audience who are watching films in single screens at affordable prices. The new GO and ticket hike for the single screens matches to the prices of the multiplex screens. When the audience are showing interest to watch the films in theatres, this is a shock for the patrons.
