Nara Lokesh has sharply criticized Opposition parties for allegedly blocking the Delimitation and Constitutional Amendment Bill, calling it a move that “betrays” South India, the North-East, and several smaller states.
In his statement, Lokesh pointed out that under Article 81 of the Constitution, the distribution of parliamentary seats among states had been frozen for decades to maintain a balance. However, he warned that without the proposed amendments, representation after the 2026 Census would be determined purely on population figures.
He argued that such a shift would disadvantage states that have effectively controlled population growth and contributed to national priorities, while benefiting those with higher population growth. According to Lokesh, this could disrupt the existing federal structure and weaken the principle of balanced representation.
Describing the development as a “direct assault on federal balance,” he held Opposition parties responsible for enabling a situation that could alter the political landscape in the coming years. The issue is expected to spark wider debate as the country approaches the next phase of delimitation after the 2026 Census
