Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki passed away in Chennai on Friday at the age of 94. She had been hospitalised after falling ill due to age-related health issues and was undergoing treatment in the ICU. Nadigar Sangam president Nassar confirmed her demise. She passed away at 1:59 PM on August 21. Her mortal remains will be kept at Cenotaph Road in Teynampet from 5 PM, allowing members of the film industry, friends and fans to pay their last respects.
Sowcar Janaki began her acting career with the 1950 Telugu film Shavukaru, directed by LV Prasad. She was paired with NT Rama Rao in the film, and the movie eventually gave her the screen name Sowcar Janaki. She later became a familiar face across Telugu and Tamil cinema, while also working in Kannada and Malayalam films. Janaki went on to act in nearly 400 films during a career that lasted more than seven decades. She started as a leading actress and gradually moved into character roles, continuing to appear alongside several generations of actors. Her filmography included Kanyasulkam, Rojulu Marayi, Doctor Chakravarty, Samsaram Oka Chadarangam, Thillu Mullu, Iru Kodugal and Hey Ram, among several others.
She was also active on stage and appeared in more than 300 stage shows. Her contribution to cinema was recognised with several awards, including the Kalaimamani and the Padma Shri, which she received in 2022. She was also honoured with Nandi Awards for her performances in Telugu films. Sowcar Janaki continued to act even in her later years. Her final film was the 2023 Telugu release Anni Manchi Sakunamule. Rest in Peace Sowcar Janaki garu.
