Thalapathy Vijay’s final film before stepping into full-time politics, Jana Nayagan, witnessed a strong recovery at the box office on its fourth day. After showing a dip in collections on Friday and Saturday, the film registered an impressive jump on Sunday, giving the makers a much-needed boost.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan was released on July 23 amid huge expectations. However, the film reportedly faced a major setback even before its theatrical release due to an alleged piracy leak, which was widely circulated online. Despite the issue and mixed reviews from audiences, the film managed to post solid numbers over its opening weekend.
According to the latest trade estimates, Jana Nayagan earned around ₹32 crore India net on Sunday alone. With this, the film’s total India gross collection has reached approximately ₹145.98 crore, while the India net stands at about ₹124.75 crore after four days.
The overseas market also contributed strongly, with the film reportedly collecting around ₹10 crore on Sunday, taking its international total to nearly ₹71.50 crore. Overall, Jana Nayagan has now grossed an estimated ₹217.48 crore worldwide in its first four days. The film is also said to have crossed ₹120 crore in distributor share globally.
Trade reports suggest that the film’s worldwide theatrical business is valued at around ₹240 crore. To recover its investment through theatrical revenue, Jana Nayagan is expected to achieve a significantly higher worldwide gross, making the coming weekdays crucial for its box office journey. Industry observers believe the film will need exceptional weekday performance and sustained audience support to reach its break-even target.
Jana Nayagan is considered a landmark film in Vijay’s career as it is expected to be his last movie before focusing entirely on his political commitments. The film stars Pooja Hegde as the female lead, while Mamitha Baiju plays an important role. Bobby Deol and Prakash Raj appear in key antagonist roles, with Sunil, Revathi and Gautham Vasudev Menon also featuring in the supporting cast.
