Bengaluru’s iconic Urvashi Theatre is set to face demolition, bringing an end to the run of one of the city’s well-known single-screen theatres. Located on Lalbagh Main Road, the theatre has been part of Bengaluru’s cinema culture for more than five decades. The demolition has now been confirmed after a long-running legal dispute over the property. Urvashi Theatre was opened in 1970 by legendary Kannada actor Dr Rajkumar and went on to screen more than 5,000 films across several languages. It hosted several major releases over the years, including films featuring Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas, Shah Rukh Khan and top Kannada stars. Shivanna’s AK 47 was among the films that had a long run at the theatre.
The property dispute has been going on for several years. The theatre premises were leased from the original landowners and the lease expired in 2018. After years of legal proceedings, the courts ruled in favour of the landowners, paving the way for the property to be handed back and the theatre to be demolished. The Supreme Court had earlier extended the time for handing over the premises while hearing the appeal.
Urvashi also remained an important venue for technological upgrades. It was among the early theatres in Bengaluru to introduce 4K digital projection and advanced sound technology. Its 3D screening of Avatar in 2009 also became a notable attraction for Bengaluru audiences.
The closure is also disappointing for Yash fans, as Urvashi was expected to host a special release of Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups. With the demolition now confirmed, another important single-screen theatre is set to disappear from Bengaluru’s cinema landscape
