After creating a history with Lagaan nearly 25 years ago, Aamir Khan and director Ashutosh Gowariker are joining hands once again for an ambitious sports drama and the film is titled Lalkaara. The film is backed by Excel Entertainment and Rajkumar Hirani. It is inspired by the historic 1952 India-Pakistan Test series, one of the most memorable chapters in Indian cricket. The project is expected to go on floors in October this year.
Lalkaara is said to blend cricket with the emotional and political backdrop of the post-Partition era. Reports suggest that Aamir Khan will portray legendary cricketer Lala Amarnath, India’s first Test captain after Independence, while the screenplay has been penned by Piyush Gupta and Neeraj Singh.
The reunion itself has generated huge excitement. Lagaan remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated sports dramas. While Ashutosh’s recent films haven’t matched that success, the filmmaker is hoping to stage a strong comeback with Lalkaara. Farhan Akhtar has a powerful role assigned in the film.
On the professional front, Aamir Khan has a busy slate with production ventures like Batwara 1947, while Lalkaara is expected to be one of the biggest Hindi films heading for a 2027 release. He also has the sequel of 3 Idiots lined up to be directed by Rajkumar Hirani
