The Independence Day weekend is bringing a mixed set of films to theatres across languages. From Suriya’s family drama Vishwanath & Sons to Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 and Sunny Deol’s period drama Batwara 1947, the lineup has films targeting different sections of the audience. Here is the list:
Vishwanath & Sons is one of the major South Indian releases of the weekend. Directed by Venky Atluri, the Tamil film stars Suriya alongside Mamitha Baiju. The trailer presents a family drama built around love, ambition and relationships, with Suriya playing a character caught between personal choices and family expectations. The film is scheduled to release on August 14th in Telugu and Tamil languages. Sithara Entertainments are the producers.
Agadha brings a completely different genre to the weekend. Directed by MS Raju, the Telugu film is a horror-mystery thriller with supernatural elements. Kamakshi Bhaskarla, Ulka Gupta, Roshan Basheer and Bhanu Chander are part of the cast. The story revolves around a mysterious setting and a young girl who encounters a strange twelve-handed mystical idol. The film is releasing on August 14th.
Pallaburusu is another Telugu release with a family-oriented setup. Directed by Uday Chauhan, the film stars Prajwal Yadma, Muralidhar Goud, Gomathy Reddy and Sudhakar Reddy. The film has been promoted as a comedy-drama and the trailer suggests a story centred on family relationships and everyday situations. Nagarjuna Akkineni is presenting this interesting attempt and the film hits the screens on August 14.
Magudam, also titled Makutam in Telugu, marks Vishal’s directorial debut. The actor is also playing the lead role, with Anjali and other actors in the cast. The film is an action drama set against a coastal backdrop and revolves around love, betrayal and revenge. The makers have planned a worldwide theatrical release on August 14th.
Awarapan 2 brings Emraan Hashmi back as Shivam Pandit, continuing the story from the 2007 film Awarapan. Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi are also part of the cast. The sequel has been positioned as an action drama with romance and emotional elements. The film was earlier scheduled for release at a different date but was postponed to August 14th, putting it directly into the Independence Day weekend competition. The trailer has already brought attention to Emraan’s return to the character.
Batwara 1947 is the period drama in the lineup. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan, the film is set against the backdrop of the Partition of India. Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta lead the cast, with Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol and Ali Fazal in important roles. The film is based on Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya Nai and has music by A.R. Rahman. It arrives in theatres on August 14th.
Panchali Panchabhartruka, The End of Oak Street and Hushar Pittalu are the other films slated for Independence Day weekend release in theatres.
