Kangana Ranaut’s Queen 2 has landed in a major legal dispute even before its release. Phantom Studios has filed a Rs 250 crore lawsuit against JioStar in the Bombay High Court, alleging that Queen 2 is an unauthorized sequel to the 2014 blockbuster Queen. The studio has also sought an injunction against the use of the film’s intellectual property. The legal battle revolves around the ownership of the Queen franchise. Phantom Studios, which owns 50% of the intellectual property rights of the original film, claims it also holds the exclusive rights to produce sequels and derivative works. According to reports, the company had issued a public notice and held several rounds of communication and settlement talks with JioStar and director Vikas Bahl before approaching the court.
The lawsuit was filed after Phantom learned that Queen 2 had completed its shoot. Queen 2 reunites Kangana Ranaut with director Vikas Bahl, the duo behind the National Award-winning Queen. The sequel went on floors earlier this year, the shoot got concluded and the film now entered post-production phase. The makers are yet to announce the film’s release date. The outcome of the case will decide the future of Queen 2. If the court grants interim relief to Phantom Studios, the release plans could face fresh hurdles. Kangana has pinned big hopes on Queen 2 after all her recent films ended up as disappointments.
